What comes to mind to mind when you think of nuts? Most probably it’s not walnuts. Yes, it’s true that walnuts are extremely underrated and overlooked although their nutritional value and health benefits are indisputable.
When you look at the folds and wrinkles of a walnut, you will most certainly find a huge similarity to the human brain. And indeed, the nutrients in this amazing nut help your brain function properly.
As delicious as they are raw, if you want to intensify the flavor, you can try toasting walnuts. It’s really easy to do, I’ll show you how.
How to Toast Walnuts?
Today I am going to share two slightly different methods, but both with equally good results.
Toasting Walnuts in the Oven
If you want to toast a larger amount of walnuts, then I’d recommend using the oven because it provides more surface space. Another advantage of this method is that your nuts will be more evenly brown. So, here’s how to toast walnut halves in the oven:
- Firstly, preheat the oven to 180C/350 F.
- While preheating, take out a baking sheet and line it with parchment paper.
- Then spread the walnut halves on the sheet in a single layer.
- Once the oven is heated, put the walnuts inside and bake for 6-7 minutes, flipping once. You’ll notice they’ll start changing color and smelling nutty.
- Take out of the oven and let them cool down. I recommend not eating the nuts while they’re fresh out of the oven and still hot, because they will burn your tongue without the slightest sign of regret on their side. Also, once they’ve cooled off completely, they’ll become more crispy and tasty!
Toasting Walnuts on the Stove
In case you want to toast a small to medium amount of walnuts, you can use a pan and do it on the stove. Just follow these simple steps and before you know it the tempting aroma of toasted walnuts will take over your house.
- To begin with, heat a large pan to medium-high.
- Then, put the walnut halves in the hot pan in a single layer.
- After a minute or two, start stirring frequently and continue toasting the walnuts until they start to brown and smell nutty. This should take as long as 5 minutes, depending on the type of your pan and stove.
- As soon as they are ready turn the heat off, remove from the stove and let the nuts cool down. They will continue toasting from their residual heat for a few more minutes and then become nice and crunchy.
How to Store
Did you toast more walnuts than you need for your recipe and wonder whether or not you can keep them for your next delicious dish? Well, yes! You absolutely can! In fact, you can store the toasted walnuts for a few weeks.
All you need to do when the nuts have cooled off is transfer them into glass jars and close with a lid. Keep them in a dark, cool, and dry place, such as your pantry. If properly stored, then they will be good enough for up to 2 weeks. After this period they may become rancid due to the high oil content.
How to Use Toasted Walnuts
The wonderful nutty flavor and high nutritional value of toasted walnuts make them perfect for breakfast bowls, such as overnight oats, chia puddings, yogurt, and granola. They are also a great ingredient for all sorts of baked goods, both savory and sweet. You can chop and sprinkle toasted walnuts over salads, fish dishes, and smoothies.
