This homemade potato chicken stew is an easy dinner idea you will want to make on repeat once you give it a go. It’s a super simple chicken recipe, very basic ingredients, but it’s really comforting and great for colder weather, like fall or winter. You will need a nice piece of bread to dip in it.

The potato chicken stew does take a long time to cook (around an hour and twenty minutes), but the work you’ll need to do is basically set it and forget it. At least for the next hour.
This chicken stew recipe is a variation of one of the most classic recipes in my home country Bulgaria, as well as in other Balkan countries like Greece, Serbia or Turkey. It is called yahnia or yakhni with chicken and it’s SO tasty!

Homemade Potato Chicken Stew Ingredients
- potatoes
- bone-in chicken drumsticks or thighs
- onion
- olive oil
- peas – frozen or from a can
- water or stock
- paprika
- salt and pepper
Did I mention simple ingredients? I didn’t lie, did I? And they’re pretty affordable too.

How To Make The Homemade Potato Chicken Stew
Peel and cut the potatoes, then peel and thinly chop the onion.

Saute the onion in olive oil and with the paprika for about 2 minutes at medium-high. Add in the potatoes, chicken, peas, salt, pepper and water or stock.

Cover the cooking pot with a lid and bring to a boil.
Once boiling reduce the heat to low and let the potato chicken stew cook for an hour.

Optionally, once the hour is up, you can take out the chicken, shred it and add it back without the bones to the yahnia. I did it this time, but it’s not necessary and in the traditional recipes, the stew is served with bone-in chicken.

If desired, let the stew cook for 5 more minutes at medium without a lid. This will thicken the sauce.
Enjoy immediately!

Serving
As mentioned, some bread is a great companion to this stew.
I also like to make this yogurt garlic sauce and serve the chicken stew with a generous dollop of it. It is SO good.

Store & Reheat
You can store any leftovers in an airtight container in the fridge for about 4-5 days.
I like to reheat leftovers on the stove, but you can use the microwave too if that’s the option you have.
