We’ll learn how to make fruit smoothies today, 3 different variations, all healthy, all delicious!
One of my favorite things on a hot day is something sweet, something cold and refreshing. Yes, we’re starting off with a riddle. Spoiler: It’s a watermelon. Well, yes, but it can also be a good fruit smoothie!
Today, I want to share three amazing, yet simple fruit smoothie recipes that you can make in about 5 minutes whenever you crave something sweet and cold (probably during summer). One is green, one is baby pink and the other one is orange. They all taste amazing!
What Are Fruit Smoothies
It’s basically fruit and milk of choice blended together to perfection. There’s something magical about a good healthy smoothie made with fresh and frozen fruits.
The best smoothies taste almost like a mixture between a milkshake and soft-serve ice cream (and as you can tell these were sweating while I was taking the pictures!).
But they’re so much healthier – no extra sugar, full of antioxidants and fiber, since they’re made with just actual fruit and a liquid of choice. A fruit smoothie can be a true kid-friendly treat, so give the recipes below a go!
INGREDIENTS For Fruit Smoothies
Now if you want to make fruit smoothies, here are some ingredients you want to have at home:
Fruit. Tart, slightly acidic, sweet-tangy, fruits do amazing in smoothies. Think kiwi, berries, oranges, tart cherries – when you follow the instructions below you’ll see what I mean.
Milk. Any type of milk you have or even water and some soaked nuts or seeds will work perfectly in these smoothies! I personally also like adding yogurt to my smoothies, as it pairs really well with the sweetness of the fruit. You can use non-dairy yogurt as well.
Sweet Or Fatty Fruit. Here are some examples to illustrate what I mean here – banana, peach, mango, pineapple and avocado. All of these fruits provide a good amount of sweetness (except avocado) and improve the texture of the smoothie.
Fruit Smoothie Tips
Before we start blending the fruit with the other ingredients here are a few tips to make the best healthy fruit smoothies:
- Use a combination of fresh and frozen fruit. Here’s a little rule I have – you want to make ice cream – use all frozen fruit. To make a smoothie, use one of them fresh. I, of course, break this rule pretty often, especially when all I have is frozen fruit. In that case, all you need to do is put all the ingredients into a blender (including the milk) and allow the fruit to thaw for about 5-10 minutes (depending on how hot it is in the room).
- Make sure to freeze fruit while it’s in season! Frozen fruit will make the smoothies thicker, colder and more refreshing. Having some frozen berries, grapes, bananas, peaches or cherries at home can also save you from snacking on unhealthy things. And when you freeze them while they’re in season, they’re so much more nutritious!
- If the smoothie is too thick for your liking – add some more milk, yogurt or water. A little bit at a time until you reach desired consistency.
- If the smoothie is not thick enough for you – add a bit more frozen fruit and blend again.
- Use a good blender! You will of course use what you have, but if you have a good high-speed blender the texture will be much smoother.
How To Make Fruit Smoothies
Making fruit smoothies is the easiest thing you can do! All you need to do:
- add fruit and milk to your blender (I like to fill the blender cup to about 1/3-1/2 level of the fruit with liquid)
- blend until smooth
If you’re using all frozen fruit, chances are the smoothie won’t blend easily. Therefore I recommend before blending to put all the ingredients into the blender and let sit at room temperature for about 10 minutes. This will allow enough time for the fruit to thaw to ensure smooth blending.
And that’s pretty much it. As mentioned, if the texture is too chunky or the fruit doesn’t blend all the way (also depends mostly on the blender) you can add a little bit more liquid. It will do the trick!
Optional Add-Ins
Now, I believe most recipes are best when simple. So I rarely opt in for additions, but here are some great options if you want to switch things up:
- cinnamon
- vanilla
- nut butter
- seeds like chia, hemp or flax
3 Refreshing Fruit Smoothie Recipes
We’ve made it to the most delicious part! These are 3 healthy fruit smoothie recipes that you will want to make again and again and again. Let’s start with my absolute favorite:
Strawberry Banana Smoothie
For this one, you want to have frozen berries and a ripe banana. Here are the ingredients:
- 1 cup frozen berries
- 1 medium-sized banana
- 2/3-1 cup milk (coconut milk will be great too!)
You can also use a frozen banana, but you will probably have to add a bit more milk in order to blend everything smoothly.
A great addition here would also be a little bit of vanilla. I used to love strawberry milkshakes when I was a child and this smoothie comes pretty close to it. Definitely a must-try!
Peach Smoothie
For the next fruit smoothie recipe, you’ll need:
- 1 1/4 cup frozen peaches
- the juice of one orange
- 1/3 cup coconut milk OR 2 tbsp yogurt
Another thing I used to love when I was a kid were those fruit yogurts with chunks of fruit in them. In particular with peaches.
So this smoothie reminds me of that minus the extra sugar that drills a hole into my tooth like a laser. Plus if you do make it with coconut it has that beautiful coconutty aroma. And if you want to add some chunks of peaches, you can do that after the blending.
Green Fruit Smoothie
Last but not least, a green fruit smoothie recipe:
- 1 frozen kiwi (in slices)
- 1/2 ripe avocado
- 1 cup frozen ripe green grapes (preferably seedless)
- 1 cup water or non-dairy milk
No spinach in this one. I said fruit, not vegetable smoothies. So we’ve got avocado, sweet frozen green grapes and some sliced up frozen kiwi for some extra acidity and vitamin C.
This smoothie is super refreshing and definitely a must-try if you’ve got grapes and kiwis in your freezer.
