Easy Tzatziki Sauce

Lately, I’ve been using this easy tzatziki sauce on everything…It’s a “side” to my salad, it goes in bowls or with rice or with meat, fish, moussaka…pretty much everything. The sauce is SO tasty and if you’ve never had or made it before, you’ll be amazed how good something this simple can taste.

For this easy tzatziki sauce you need five minutes and five ingredients including Greek yogurt and garlic. This sauce is great for meal prep and you can serve it with cooked meat, fish, beans or potatoes!

Like this 5-minute tzatziki recipe can take your dinner to the next level and all you need to make it are 5 super simple

ingredients:

(I know you’re impressed by this transition, I’m very proud of it)

tzatziki ingredients

  1. cucumber
  2. garlic
  3. dill
  4. strained Greek yogurt
  5. salt

And if you want olive oil. However I feel the strained Greek yogurt is fat enough for me, so I usually skip the olive oil. That said, you can also use lower fat unflavored yogurt for the recipe. In that case, the sauce will be a bit thinner, but still delicious.

About Tzatziki

Now usually, most tzatziki recipes would take you through a history lesson about how this sauce came to be. But I won’t do that. I think all you need to know about tzatziki is that

  • it’s mouthwatering,
  • they serve it as an appetizer in Greece and I highly recommend you try it when you go there
  • it goes really well with bread, potatoes, fries, salad, fish, meat (so you know what to order it with)

I used it in my amazing Mediterranean bowls with chicken, rice and salad. The combo was honestly SO tasty and super healthy as well!

How To Make Tzatziki Sauce

Nothing’s easier than this! You basically:

  • grate the cucumber, thinly chop dill and mince some garlic
  • add everything to a bowl
  • mix well and add salt to taste
  • then serve

It takes 5 minutes. Originally recipes require you to squeeze out the juice of the cucumber before adding it to the rest of the ingredients, but I didn’t find it necessary. I think the most important part of making tzatziki is to use thick, strained yogurt. The garlic takes care of the rest.

How To Store

The tzatziki sauce is really great for meal prep! It will store well in the fridge for 2-3 days in an airtight container – I use a recycled jar for this. So feel free to make more ahead.

How To Serve and Options

There are some ways you can change up the recipe:

  • use no dill
  • add in mint instead of dill
  • add in some lemon if you like

This appetizer goes really well with meat, fish, shrimp, grilled vegetables, hummus, Greek salad or any other salad. Here are some examples of recipes to serve with tzatziki:

My family has been making a recipe similar to the Greek tzatziki all my life, but we just cut the cucumber super thinly instead of grating and squeezing the life out of it. And it, honestly, tastes similar. I know, shocking, the shape doesn’t change the taste.

We’d consider it a salad and we’d serve it for lunch or dinner during summer with tomato cucumber salad, fries or baked potatoes or grilled zucchini or fish or meat. Or everything together.
